Is SPF in My Moisturiser or Makeup Enough? What "Broad Spectrum" Actually Means

If your moisturiser says SPF 15 and your foundation says SPF 20, does that equal SPF 35? No ...and this is one of the most widespread SPF myths that could be leaving your skin unprotected.

Why SPF in Makeup Is Not Enough

SPF ratings are measured based on applying 2mg per cm² of skin, a standard that most people don't come close to achieving with a foundation or tinted moisturiser. Studies show that people typically apply only 20–25% of the recommended amount of SPF in makeup. At that coverage, an SPF 20 foundation effectively delivers only SPF 2–3 in real world use (Skin Cancer Foundation, 2023). Dermatologists recommend using a dedicated sunscreen underneath, applied generously, before any makeup (AAD, 2026).

UVA vs UVB: Why "Broad Spectrum" Matters

"Broad spectrum" means a sunscreen protects against both UVB rays (which cause sunburn) and UVA rays (which penetrate deeper, causing ageing and long-term pigmentation changes). Not all sunscreens with an SPF number are automatically broad spectrum. The SPF number only measures UVB protection; you need to specifically look for "broad spectrum" on the label to know you are also protected from UVA (American Academy of Dermatology, 2026). All Ocean Freedom sunscreens are broad-spectrum, protecting against both UVA and UVB.
