The 2023 Tyrelife SA Para Surf Champs and Para Surf League Open Powered by Ocean Freedom showcased the incredible talent and determination of para surfers from all over the world. The event was held at Muizenberg Beach in South Africa, and the finals day proved to be an epic day of surfing. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 22 May 2023 Finals day at the 2023 Tyrelife SA Para Surf Champs and Para Surf League Open Powered by Ocean Freedom proved to be an epic day of surfing at Muizenberg Beach, South Africa. The weather turned sharply from the previous day, kicking off with strong onshore winds and a strong choppy current pushing to the west. Not to be deterred and knowing they must surf the waves they are given, athletes started the heats at 8:30 despite the conditions. By day’s end the clouds parted and Muizenberg provided a beautiful day for champions to be crowned. This contest not only saw the best of South Africa rise to the podium, but was also the first stop and the first of its kind Para Surfing Continental Zone Championships. Athletes competing in the contest earned points towards their global standing and will be eligible to take part in the Para Surf League Global Championships, being held later in the year in the United States. The opening day of the 2023 Tyrelife Solutions SA Para Surf Championship and Para Surf League Open powered by Ocean Freedom saw 62 athletes competing across 9 Para Surf divisions and three inclusive open divisions today at Surfers Corner, Muizenberg. Athletes kicked off the event in decent 2-3 foot waves that held for most of the day with a steady offshore wind. The first day finished with an expression session featuring some of the top Para Surfers from around the world including South African Team member and ISA Silver Medalist JP Veaudry. “What an extraordinary collaborative effort from athletes, volunteers, supporters, family, chaperones, coaches, water safety, officials, sponsors and event partners to make the opening day of the SA Para Surf Champs and Para Surf League Open such a huge success” said Roxy Davis, Event Lead Organizer.
