SUN PROTECTION

Sensitive Skin and Sunscreen: How Mineral Filters Calm Rather Than Irritate

If sunscreen has ever stung your skin, caused flushing, or left you red and reactive, you're not alone and the solution may be as simple as switching to mineral.

Why Chemical (also known as organic) Sunscreen Irritates Sensitive Skin

Chemical sunscreen filters work by absorbing UV radiation and converting it to heat which is then released from the skin. This heat-generating process can trigger flushing and irritation in people with rosacea, eczema, or reactive skin (Doctronic.ai, 2026). Several chemical filters, including oxybenzone, have also been linked to contact dermatitis and allergic reactions. A 2019 FDA-commissioned study confirmed that certain chemical UV filters are absorbed into the bloodstream a concern for people with compromised skin barriers (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, 2019).

Why Zinc Oxide (also known as a physical sunscreen) Works Differently

Zinc oxide is the active ingredient in all Ocean Freedom sunscreens and works as a physical barrier, sitting on top of the skin and reflecting UV rays away without generating heat (Doctronic.ai, 2026). It does not penetrate the skin. Research published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology (2019) found that zinc oxide nanoparticles remained within the epidermis even after repeated applications and showed no cellular toxicity (Harvard Health, 2019). Dermatologists specifically recommend zinc-based formulas for patients with rosacea, eczema and post-procedure skin because of zinc's inherent anti-inflammatory and barrier-supportive properties.

Ingredients to Avoid if You Have Sensitive Skin

Fragrance is the number one cause of sensitisation in skincare. If your skin is reactive, also avoid sunscreens containing alcohol (denatured), oxybenzone, avobenzone and homosalate. Ocean Freedom products are formulated without fragrance, parabens, or sulphates designed to be gentle enough for the whole family, including post-procedure and reactive skin types.
