SUN PROTECTION

SPF 30 vs SPF 50: Which Sunscreen Strength Is Actually Right for You?

SPF 30 or SPF 50 it's one of the most Googled sunscreen questions. The numbers are closer than you would expect, but the choice still matters depending on your lifestyle.

What the Numbers Actually Mean

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It measures how much UVB radiation (the type that causes sunburn) is blocked when the product is applied as directed. SPF 30 filters approximately 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 filters approximately 98% (Schweiger Dermatology, 2026; Skin Cancer Foundation, 2023). That's only a 1% difference in percentage but look at it another way: SPF 30 lets 3% of UVB through, while SPF 50 lets 2% through. SPF 30 is therefore allowing 50% more UV radiation onto your skin compared to SPF 50 (Skin Cancer Foundation, 2023).

When SPF 50 Is the Better Choice

For most people in everyday settings, SPF 30 is sufficient if applied generously and reapplied every 2 hours. However, SPF 50 is recommended and in the South African context, often essential if you: have fair or light skin that burns easily; spend extended time outdoors; surf, run, cycle or swim; have a history of skin cancer or hyperpigmentation; or are at high altitude or near reflective surfaces like water, sand or white buildings (Schweiger Dermatology, 2026; Mediclinic Family, 2024).

Dermatologist Dr. Shasa Hu from the University of Miami notes that a higher SPF gives you a meaningful buffer against under-application. Most people apply only 25–50% of the recommended amount, so a higher SPF compensates for real-world use (Today.com, 2025).

SPF and the South African Sun

South Africa has one of the highest UV indexes in the world. On a clear summer day in Cape Town or Durban, the UV index regularly reaches 11–12+ (extreme). Mediclinic dermatologists advise that SPF 50 is the minimum daily protection factor for South Africans (Mediclinic Family, 2024). This is the standard Ocean Freedom builds to: all products are SPF50+ and tested under actual African sun conditions.
