Most people apply far too little sunscreen and as a result, the SPF number on the bottle never actually performs as it should. Here's the simple guide to getting the right amount every time.
The Science Behind Application Amount
SPF ratings are tested at 2mg of product per cm² of skin. In practice, the majority of people apply between 0.5 and 1mg/cm² roughly 25–50% of the required amount. At half the dose, an SPF 50 can perform more like an SPF 7 (Skin Cancer Foundation, 2023; Today.com, 2025).
The Teaspoon Rule: Your Practical Guide
Face and neck: approximately half a teaspoon (around 3ml). Body (full): roughly 6 teaspoons total about 35ml. Each arm: one teaspoon. Each leg: two teaspoons. Front and back torso: two teaspoons each. Don't forget ears, the back of your neck, the top of your feet, and especially for surfers and outdoor athletes the scalp along the parting.
Reapplication Matters as Much as Amount
Apply 15–20 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every 2 hours or every 40–80 minutes if swimming, surfing or sweating heavily (Cleveland Clinic, 2025; FDA guidelines via Coola, 2025). Even the best sunscreen on the market loses effectiveness through UV degradation, sweat, water and towel friction. The amount you apply and how often you reapply are the two most important factors in real-world protection.
