Choosing the right sunscreen for a long distance swim

Long distance swimmers in the ocean

Swimming long distances is a true test of endurance, but don’t forget about protecting your skin along the way. Choosing the right sunscreen can make all the difference in achieving your goals and staying comfortable in the water.

Choosing the right sunscreen for a long-distance swim is important to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun’s UV rays. Here are some things to consider when choosing a sunscreen:

Water-resistant:

Look for a sunscreen that is water-resistant, which means it won’t wash off easily when you sweat or swim.

SPF:

Choose a sunscreen with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 30 or higher. This will provide adequate protection from the sun’s harmful rays.

Broad-spectrum:

Make sure the sunscreen is broad-spectrum, which means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

Non-greasy:

Choose a sunscreen that is non-greasy, as this will be more comfortable to wear during a long-distance swim.

Lightweight:

Look for a sunscreen that is lightweight, so it won’t weigh you down or affect your performance in the water.

Tested and approved:

Look for a sunscreen that has been tested and approved by dermatologists or other skin experts.

Allergies:

If you have allergies, look for a sunscreen that is dermatologically formulated and free from common irritants.

Some additional tips for using sunscreen during a long-distance swim:

  1. Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before getting in the water.
  2. Reapply sunscreen every two hours or after swimming or sweating.
  3. Use enough sunscreen to cover all exposed skin.
  4. Wear a hat or other protective clothing to shade your face and body from the sun.

Remember, protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays is important, especially during a long-distance swim where you’ll be exposed to the sun for an extended period of time.
